I am at the space in between
In between maiden and mother
In between Hannah and Mama
In between family of 2 and family of 3
In between business owner and business owner and mother
I am opening, blossoming like the lotus each day
I am a portal between the spiritual realm and earthside
I am calling in this beautiful spirit to come grace us with his love and light
I am the body, the mama, that he picked to be on this planet with
I am in this magical place of amazement, understanding, and gratitude
I am also in this place of physical discomfort, lack of sleep, and curiosity
Most days feel like the days leading up to Christmas or a big trip!
What's going to happen? When? Where? Who?
So many questions...
But the one thing that stays constant is- our son is on the other side!
I am mourning the loss of the maiden
I am mourning the loss of the woman who needed others- now I am the one needed
I am mourning the loss of a more free schedule (let's be honest- a business is a baby)
I am mourning the loss of a family of 2
But with this mourning- I am embracing...
I am embracing each ache as my hips are opening to deliver
I am embracing each contraction as my body is preparing me for the big day
I am embracing the lack of sleep because not only is it preparing me for the long nights- it gives me quiet time to reflect, like now, on where I truly am in this journey
I am embracing this journey as it's not an easy one- but the lessons and learnings are amazing- and an even more amazing gift will be in our arms soon!
I am healed
I am whole
I am complete
I am strong
I am supported
I am determined
I welcome our son with grace and with fire!
From the moment I found out that I was pregnant... I quickly began to see that everyone has an opinion and advice on how to have a baby...prenatal, birth, postnatal, etc... Most often- they give their advice and state their opinion without my consent on wanting to hear it or not. Constantly being inundated with "oh you should do this" or "oh donnnnnnn't do that"... Both sides of the spectrum! From hospital births with "drugs" to home births with "free births". Judgement has been thrown ALL AROUND!
To be honest... it has made me sick to my stomach. And that's not just pregnancy nausea... it's women inserting their fear and their beliefs on me and my unborn son.
It took 9 months for River's soul to choose Brooks and I... Towards month 6, I was heart broken. And I know- 9 months isn't really that long in the grand scheme of it all. But for some reason I thought it would just be easy. As I also thought being pregnant would too (hahaha!)! Let me clarify this now and get this out there in the open- my apologies for not understanding the aches and pains of my fellow sisters as they went through their pregnancies... Yes- pregnancy tired is unlike any other tired I have ever experienced and I know more is to come these last 4-7 weeks and postpartum. Once we discovered I was pregnant, we began alllllll the research that new parents can dive into! How many rabbit holes are there? A ton! From dr/midwives, birthing options, hospital/home birth, vaccinations, prenatal vitamins or not, dietary restrictions or is this just fear based don't eat it, etc, etc. There are so many different views on everything!! So how in the hell are two new parents supposed to figure this all out?!?! Intuition folks!
Intuition is where I have put my whole pregnancy into motion... I have read at minimum 9 books on pregnancy, breastfeeding, pp, etc (still have 4 more before lil man arrives), listened to probably 150+ hours of podcasts on birth, home birth, etc, watched numerous documentaries on water birth (our method we have chosen), home birth, Ina May Gaskins, Hypnobirthing, Business of Being Born, etc, etc, etc. Through all of this- I have still decided to birth with a wonderful midwife group that delivers at a hospital that has one of the lowest cesarean rates in the state, the head Labor and Deliver Nurse is a dream come true, they offer water birth, and they support ME and MY birth plan... that can be unheard of... But I feel confident in my decision- why? My INTUITION!
I've had a few home birth practitioners, and a say a few because I have had lots of support from others, that are shocked that I, a yogi who owns a yoga studio and lives (as much as I can) a holistic lifestyle - would choose to "give up my power by birthing in a *gasp* hospital"... When we did our tour of the hospital I had a slew of questions and I was ready to fight for my answers that I wanted to hear... The RN answered every question that I needed to hear with the answer my soul and birth plan had envisioned! Golden hour, delayed cord clamping, not pushing on any induction/drugs/c-section/circumcision/etc. My husband looked and me and I think he saw me melt... I knew I was home... This place is home for us for this first baby... Now who knows- maybe after this experience I decide- hey I wanna do it at home- but it's my right and my choice!
My intuition has also led me to know that there are some midwives, or medwives as some like to call them because they treat you like a number and not a person, that I just don't mesh well with. I had an experience with one yesterday that truly broke my spirit. I went in feeling amazing! On top of the world! I finally had some energy, I was looking good, felt great, weight was consistent even though I feel like Violet from Willy Wonka. I was loving being pregnant yesterday until I saw this midwife. I had seen her once before and did not care at all for her, but when I was put with her again- I sucked it up and said "everyone needs a second chance"... wellllllll... My intuition was right... she placed fear in me. Shamed me for the "numbers" that in all honesty I feel like she just didn't measure me right... But it wasn't her fault- it was mine. Told me to walk, swim, drink more water- cut out all sugar... This woman obviously doesn't know who I am and what I do on a daily basis or see the large jug of spring water I drink each day. Initially I felt hurt... shamed...fear... my baby is unhealthy because I am... but I'm not... Then I felt compassion for her. I'm pretty sure she's never carried a baby to this length... and I can tell you- breathing is hard no matter how much fluid may be in your womb! I left feeling defeated... my husband told me I needed to stand my ground (and I have been every which of way in life- just didn't with her!! And why?)!
I called first thing this morning to see if I could get a second opinion (opting out of an additional ultrasound that is frivolous in our eyes- I know River and I are healthy!) and to claim my power back. The midwife that I have been seeing 80% of this pregnancy called me back on her day off... calmed me down and told me how healthy I am, how I healthy my baby is, and even if I had extra fluid- there is no reason to induce... She told me it's my body and I know what's going on with it! To listen to my intuition... She helped me see that my power was always there!! And for her I am so thankful!
Pregnancy is hard. Labor- I will let you know my thoughts on that when it happens. If you are pregnant, listen to your intuition, your gut! Make the decisions for YOU! I do encourage you to do research so you can make informed decisions... as you can see from my experience yesterday- not every midwife out there is for you! Find someone who will stand beside you and behind you! Someone who will lift you back up when you are just too damn tired to stand your ground! Your birth is YOURS and your baby's and you can make it however magical you want it to be! And please- don't let anyone take it away from you because they want to put you in a place of fear or shame! Rise above them and do what's best for you and baby! If you ever want any support- let me know and I will be there for you!
You cannot pour from an empty cup... But so much of us do... It doesn't have to be just women giving the energy that they don't have for themselves, but we tend to do it more often than not. Living in the mentality that you cannot say "no" and that you don't want anyone to suffer, you will go above and beyond to make sure that they are taken care of, while you yourself are on your last leg and crying when alone because you are so tired.
This happens every day.
It happens with me often.
That final straw that just broke my back... Where I throw in the towel and take a "Me Day"...
But that's not healthy... We need to maintain an active self-care routine to prevent this burnout.
Self-care is taking the time out of your busy day, or busy week, and doing whatever makes your soul sing.
It could be reading, watching the stars, taking a bath, getting a massage, yoga class, communion with sisters, cooking yourself a nice meal... Whatever makes you sit back and say "ahh that's exactly what I needed to let go". It is encouraged to fill your cup at least once a week. Some carve out time to do it every day and kudos for that!
In our HERizon Red Tent Temple this Friday, March 31st (630-9pm) we will discuss why it's important to take care of ourselves, as we fill our "cups" in the tent! Join us as we fill ourselves us so we can go back out into the world healing, loving, and taking care of those around us!
HERizon Red Tent Temple is a place for women to come together and empower one another!
Rising together to claim our own power!
2 years ago in March I was approaching my graduation from Yoga Teacher Training at Be Yoga in Downtown Marietta and I remember sitting down to reflect on how far I had come, as well as other dreams I wanted to manifest. A Red Tent was on this short list. I always knew that I wanted to be a part of something that would help women find empowerment. Where women could come together and raise one another up, as well as learn new things from the other women in their community!
On my honeymoon back in May, I was sitting on the beach with my husband reading Women Who Run with The Wolves. It truly spoke to me and woke up something inside of me... "Healthy wolves & healthy women share certain psychic characteristics. Keen sensing, playful spirit, and a heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves & women are relational by nature inquiring, possessed of great endurance & strength. They are deeply intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mates, and their pack. They are experienced in adapting to constantly changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart and very brave" Women Who Run With the Wolves - Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés. I realized that there are other wolves, women, out there who are looking for their pack. I looked at my husband and told him I wanted to start a Red Tent. And so here we are! When Horizon Training Center came into my life, my business partners wife- and my dear friend, Hannah Mitchell, and I began the brainstorming for a Red Tent- HERizon! We knew we had the space, and the intention, that it would come to fruition!
What is our intention?
Hannah Squared (Hannah Hutcheson and Hannah Mitchell) hope to empower other women, bring women together and stop the divide of judgement/insecurities/etc, educate women on the power that we harness, educate one another on topics ranging from networking to crocheting, sharing a sacred space with beautiful souls, and eventually providing a space where we can bring in the next generation of women and teach them how to embrace their bodies, their menstrual cycles, and know that they will always have a pack of wolves right beside them!
What is a Red Tent?
A Red Tent is where women gather in a circle, from all different walks of life, and share with their hearts open and leaving any preconceived notions and judgement outside of the tent. This is a place where we care for one another and nurture ourselves with healing, song, meditation, story telling, council, music, and sharing. We learn about our bodies and their cycles, the lunar cycles, reconnecting to Earth, rewilding ourselves to our natural self, and develop and nurture ways to cope. We are nurturing a sacred Sisterhood that so many of us have lost in today's competitive society.
Join us, Friday, March 31st, at the HERizon Red Tent Temple Hosted by Horizon Training Center as we empower our fellow sisters, learn from one another, network amongst a group of like minded sisters, and learn more about ourselves, our world, and claim our power in this world!
6:30-7 is for everyone to get comfortable and we will not start our sharing circle until 7:30. So please, do not feel the need to rush! We will be here for you!
A Love Donation is asked of $10 to enter the tent.
Kids Yoga is a wonderful way to get your kids moving, using their imagination, and give them the tools to becoming aware.
A lot of schools are understanding the importance of yoga and the increased concentration amongst their students. Therefore, performing better on tests, etc.
In our kids classes, we start with an introduction to get the kids comfortable with the group and their teacher. We then work on breathing exercises to calm the kids. From there we begin the asana, poses, where they can use their imagination and create poses as well. We read a story and discuss things we should do and not do (Niyamas and Yamas from the 8 Limbs of Yoga). And then we use our imagination to go to a happy place where we can relax and be free!
But there are SO many more benefits than just concentration.
Owning your own business can be a lot of work, but oh is it worth it! Every day we get to walk into a room filled with our passion, whether it be teaching yoga, TRX, or martial arts. We are living out our dreams!
For myself, Hannah, I know that every person that walks into my class, they are here for a reason. They are looking for health, balance, and healing! It makes my heart swell knowing that these amazing souls have entrusted me in this journey for them!
We teach from the heart and that's one of the things I love so much about Horizon Training Center! Every instructor fully believes in the power of what we do!
Another amazing perk of owning your own business, is being able to give back to the community! David and myself, donate our time and energy into as many great programs as we can. Ranging from Cherokee Family Violence Center, the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville, and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. From teaching self defense classes for a good cause, or yoga classes, we want to give back to the community of Cherokee County, and those surrounding.
Stay tuned for more charity events that we host! Horizon Training Center
Have you fallen off the health train? Going strong for a few weeks after the new year, trying to reach your resolutions, but then you fell off and haven't been able to get back on the health train?
You are not alone...
It's hard to get a schedule in place that you can comfortably continue throughout the year because it takes you out of your comfort zone. Once you experience this discomfort- we resist. It's human nature, but something you can conquer!
If you have found yourself not going to the gym, exercising, eating healthy, or just making time for yourself- here are a few tips to help you:
1. Connect with why you want to reach the goals you set.
Why do you want to reach this goal? Is it for you, your health, your spouse? If you can fully connect to why you want to reach this goal, then you are more likely to succeed. If you find yourself not reaching your goals, remind yourself why it's important to you and what it will bring to you. This can help reenergize your connection with the goal and get you back on track!
2. Don't let setbacks get you down.
We all have those moments where we have halfway completed a goal, but we can't go any further. For example: our goal was to lose 20 pounds and we lost 10 and can't seem to lose the last 10 pounds. This in no way means that you are a failure or you didn't meet your goal- you did meet your goal of losing weight. Think of the positives that come from losing the 10 pounds: healthier, clothes fit better, you feel better, more energy, etc. From there you can...
3. Redefine your goals.
You may have noticed that you set difficult goals to reach, so redefine them- there is no shame in that. If you lost 10 pounds and wanted to lose 20 pounds, maybe set the goal to lose another 10 or maybe to lose a certain amount of inches. We aren't all going to lose weight, but we may lose inches. You may also find that 10 was the perfect amount for you and you are happy with the way you feel and look! It's not always about the numbers- remember that! Life changes, things happen, reworking your goals to meet what you are currently facing is a great way to refresh yourself and start obtaining your goals again.
4. Reach out for help.
Horizon Training Center is here to help you reach your goals! We offer TRX, Self Defense, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Personal Training, and Yoga & Meditation to take a fully balanced approach to helping everyone find the healthiest version of themselves! Let us know your goals and we can help design a plan of action to get your body in movement and your mind in motion!

“But I Don’t Have Time...”
Many people will say that the main reason they don't workout, or eat right, is because of time.
We are all probably guilty of this at some point in our lives. This man made concept that dictates everything we do. We never feel as though we have enough time to accomplish anything.
We are waking up early to rush to get everyone in the house out the door, off to school/work/or household duties, in the afternoon we may be rushing kids to their afterschool activities maybe 2 a day, then rushing home to throw something quick together to eat or take out,homework/housework, and then going to bed absolutely exhausted because we spread ourselves too thin.
We are even doing this to our children. Overscheduling has become the new trend across America. Eventually we will all burn ourselves out with our “so busy” way of life and in the process we are dramatically taking a toll on our wellbeing and our health.
How many times have you said:
● "Oh I will just have to run through the drive through because I don't have enough time to fix dinner." You know you can meal prep.
● "I didn't have time to workout today." 10 minutes is better than none. You could
go for a walk, do a small circuit, stretch.
● "I don't have time to read." But maybe you have time to play on facebook or watch
● "You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes, unless you don't have enough time.
Then you should sit for at least an hour." This is true. If you think that you don't have
the time then you should carve out the time. That should be for all aspects of your life.
● Eating healthy
● Spending time with your family
We have 24 hours in a day. You can find time through your day to add in healthy
options and to cut out things that are not ultimately serving your health.
The best way to go about this is to:
● Write down your daily schedule from what time you wake up to what time you go
to bed. And don’t forget to add in computer time, drive time, tv time, etc.
● Write down your health goals and ways that you would go about achieving them
(i.e. lose 20 pounds: workout at least 30 minutes a day, pack my lunch, etc).
● Now put these side to side. Start to look at what you can remove from your daily
schedule and find ways to add in activities that will help you reach your goals. (Stop
mid afternoon computer time and add in a 30 minute walk. Cut out TV time once a
week and meal prep for lunch.)
If we all cared as much about our health as we do about time we would understand
that time goes by fast, and we need to get a grasp on our health while we can!
If you are struggling with finding time to reach your health goals, feel free to email
our staff at email@example.com and we would love to help you out!
“No one is busy in this world, it is all about priorities...”
TRX has me hanging around... Literally and physically!
Yeah.... I'm going to admit something that probably isn't the best for a studio owner- but I really don't like working out. *GASP*
Time. Being sore. Lifting weights. Getting sweaty. You can ask my lifetime fitness coach (my Grandmother) how much I hate sweating! The only way I can deal with any of this- is through an artistic or healing art.
Dance- I danced for 20 years. From ballet to jazz, modern, hip hop, lyrical, heck- even belly dancing! It was everything to me. It was a way for the introverted soul I was to express myself.
Once I stopped dancing- I found yoga! And oooooh did it give me the same feeling that dance did, but even deeper. Through yoga I started working through my fears (I am not strong enough. I am not good enough.) and quickly realized that negative talk was what was always holding me back in life. Through yoga I discovered that I am strong (hello- have you held plank for longer than 5 seconds?) and I am enough. Yoga also opened me up spiritually to what I like to call the Divine.
Then one day I stumbled upon this awesome TRX & Yoga studio named Outpost Training Co. (which I now own with my business partner David and we are Horizon Training Center!) and started teaching yoga there! The OTC owner had me try some TRX classes. Holy Hades! Muscles I had not felt in years- even with ALL of the yoga I do! I began to notice my body becoming to flexible (there is such a thing) and I knew I needed to work on strength to balance that! TRX did that!
TRX changed my yoga practice! I became stronger immediately from all of those lovely TRX Atomic PushUps! My legs started redefining in a way that helped me in my Warriors and Lunges through the endless amounts of TRX Jump Squats! I even, for the first time in my 30 years on this planet, realized that food is fuel. I needed to consume calories to help me with my workouts, yoga practice, and teaching all the time!
TRX is an amazing workout! I LOVE to workout now! You can find me hanging on these straps all the time expending some energy or working on my strength! Born in the Navy SEALs, Suspension Training bodyweight exercise develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. It requires the use of the TRX Suspension Trainer, a performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to complete hundreds of exercises. TRX is infinitely scalable and anyone, no matter what your fitness level is, can get a fast effective full-body workout!
TRX is designed to get you moving, increase your mobility, and find what works for you! This workout will make your muscles burn, ignite your core, challenge your cardiovascular engine and will get you in shape – fast! 45 minutes.
Every TRX workout begins with a few stretches and exercises to get your body warmed up for the cardiovascular journey you are about to embark on.
Typically, each class will be comprised of two separate circuits of alternating exercises, 12-15 minutes each, challenging your body, your mind, and getting your heart rate pumping so you can burn calories and build muscle.
After the two circuits a short series of stretches offer your body a nice cool down and allowing the muscles to relax before you leave the gym.
Modifications are always offered in each class depending on what your fitness level is. Each class has a wide range of fitness level participants, but everyone is there for the same goal- health.
If you haven't tried TRX yet and you are looking to change your life- then come "hang" out with me on the straps! Your first class is FREE :)
